Black Myth: Zhong Kui Unveiled as Sequel to Wukong

Developer Game Science has officially announced

Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the second title in its acclaimed Black Myth series. The reveal took place at Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 20, 2025, a date that also marked the first anniversary of the release of its predecessor, Black Myth: Wukong. While it serves as a follow-up, the studio describes it as a standalone experience inspired by different elements of Chinese folklore rather than a direct continuation of Wukong's story.

A New Protagonist: The Ghost King

The game shifts its focus to a new legendary figure from Chinese mythology, Zhong Kui. Known as the "ghost-catching god" or "king of ghosts," Zhong Kui is a demon-slayer who travels between hell and earth to protect against supernatural threats. Game Science stated the change in protagonist was made to "shake up" the gameplay and explore fresh ideas within its modern reimagining of ancient folklore.

Gameplay and Development

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is confirmed to be a single-player, story-driven action RPG, similar to its predecessor. Game Science aims to deliver major upgrades to both gameplay and narrative, intending to fix flaws from the previous title and introduce bolder features.

However, the game is in the very early stages of development, with its outline reportedly still incomplete. Consequently, no specific gameplay mechanics have been detailed. The development team has expanded since the release of Wukong, potentially allowing for the implementation of more ambitious features in this new title.

Teaser Trailer and Platforms

A cinematic teaser trailer was revealed during the announcement, though it contained no gameplay footage. The trailer depicted a group of men hiding from a parade of mythical beings, which culminated in the appearance of Zhong Kui riding a giant tiger. Cryptic dialogue was featured, with lines such as, "Brother, help me," and "They're coming, boss". On-screen text confirmed the game's focus on Zhong Kui and its ARPG roots.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is planned for release on PC and all mainstream console platforms. No release date or window has been announced, and given the early stage of development, a long production cycle is expected.

Building on Wukong's Legacy

The announcement comes after the massive success of Black Myth: Wukong, which was considered China's first major AAA title and sold 10 million copies in its first three days. Rumors suggest that Game Science may have scrapped DLC plans for Wukong to focus entirely on this new project. Furthermore, potential trademarks for other Black Myth titles like

Jiang Ziya, Xiao Qian, and Shan Hai have been reported, hinting at the studio's ambition to build a broader series based on Chinese mythology. Community reactions on X have been largely excited about the new direction and visual style, despite the long wait ahead.
